Mike is a Birmingham native with deep roots in the community. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Birmingham-Southern College and a Master of Business Administration from Samford University. His career began in banking as a Commercial Loan Officer with SouthTrust Bank, but his passion for financial markets soon led him to the Investment Division of Central Bank of the South. He has been a licensed investment professional since 1986.
Mike entered the industry just before the Black Monday crash on October 19, 1987—an experience that shaped his understanding of market cycles and client needs. Since then, he has dedicated his career to helping individuals save for retirement and confidently navigate their financial futures. He believes deeply in the value of financial planning as a roadmap for long-term success, providing guidance that helps clients stay on track as life evolves.
In addition to his work with individuals, Mike has extensive experience managing investments for institutional clients, including banks, credit unions, and not-for-profit healthcare organizations. He works closely with not-for-profit healthcare foundations, advising Finance Committees and Boards as they oversee institutional investment managers. His role includes ensuring compliance with Investment Policy Statements and holding managers accountable for performance aligned with organizational goals.
In 2024, Mike founded Mashburn Financial, LLC, reflecting his continued commitment to providing personalized, high-quality financial guidance to his clients.
Mike is an active member of All Saints Episcopal Church, where he has served in leadership roles on the Finance Committee for a decade and completed two terms on the Vestry. He also served as a Cub Scout Pack Committee Chair when his son Michael participated in scouting.
Mike is married to Debbie Mashburn, and together they have three children—Michael, Lucy, and Abby. Their family has grown to include sons-in-law Dr. Patrick Young and Sam Williams. Above all, Mike treasures time with his granddaughter, Kate, who proudly holds the top spot in his heart. When time allows, he also enjoys golfing, yardwork, and competitive bowling; he and Debbie are past champions in their co-ed league.
Mike is licensed to sell life and health insurance in the state of Alabama.
